What did I think?

Six Mile Store is a novella with 113 pages so it's a very quick read that I read in one sitting and I really enjoyed it.

The store is in the middle of nowhere but there's a lot going on with the characters to really draw the reader in.  Through the eyes of Honey, who works at the store, we peek into her life and encounter a wealth of colourful characters.  It reads like an episode of a bingeworthy TV series with vibes of Breaking Bad and Hillbilly Elegy.

It's very character driven and I was invested in Honey's story but also intrigued by the other quirky characters.  I mean what does Billy Wayne do with all that toilet paper and who is this Lisa woman who seems to turn up out of the blue to start managing the store?  There may not be many pages in the book but there's a lot going on and it is very addictive reading.

Atmospheric, gritty and dark, Six Mile Store is a compulsive and unusual book that shocked and entertained me.  It's well worth a read if you're looking for something a bit different.

What did I think?

If you like historical fiction you will love The Case of the Hydegild Sacrifice.  I don't know a great deal about American history so it was really interesting to read historical fiction set during the Abraham Lincoln era.  You think you know what happened to Lincoln?  Think again...

I have to admit that it took me a little while to get into the book because of all of the footnotes.  Some of the footnotes clearly show the depth of research that has gone into writing this novel but it was the footnotes that reference earlier books in the series that I found a little irrelevant to me (as I hadn't read those books).  You don't need to have read the earlier books in the series to enjoy this one though as it's my introduction to the series and I think it's brilliant.

I thoroughly enjoyed the telling of the story and even though I knew what was going to happen (as it is based on real events) I was completely riveted.  I found myself inspired to learn more about the events in the book and asking myself questions about things that I had never even considered before.

I must also mention Major Gask and Erroll Rait, who are a kind of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson and happen to be in America when Lincoln is assassinated.  Together with a Pinkerton agent that they met on their voyage over, they help to investigate first the assassination plot and then the assassination itself.  What they find is most unexpected and questions everything I thought I knew about this event.

Impeccably researched and incredibly entertaining, The Case of the Hydegild Sacrifice is a fantastic historical fiction novel based on real life events.  David Cairns of Finavon brings the period and the characters to life in this compelling, informative and fascinating novel.  A very highly recommended read.

What did I think?

The General's Wife is a wonderful debut novel that gives the reader a glance into US military life from a side you don't often see: that of the wives and partners.  The armed forces have such an important and difficult job but so do those they leave behind when they're deployed.

With reference to a secret in chapter one, I was immediately drawn into the story and just had to find out what was haunting Maggie from her past.  Maggie is a Brigadier General's wife and any scandal would be a detriment to his career progression.  That's why Maggie agrees to pay a blackmailer to keep her secret hidden but this means that she is hiding something else from her husband.

The secret is revealed to the reader through flashbacks to Maggie's youth and it broke my heart to see Maggie carrying this burden for so many years.  Secrets can fester if you try to bury them and it's true what they say about a problem shared but Maggie is terrified of the consequences and she doesn't know who she can trust.

I love secrets in a novel so I was hooked from the start and as much as I wanted to know what the secret was I was enjoying the whole story of Maggie's life, both past and present, just as much.  Maggie is such a strong character that I really came to care about her and she would definitely give us Brits a run for our money in the stiff upper lip stakes.

Completely captivating and incredibly intriguing, The General's Wife is filled with love, honour and respect.  It's a riveting story and it's so beautifully written that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

What did I think?

Oh my goodness, I could not put this gripping and compelling book down!  It's definitely a 'just one more chapter' kind of a book and then 'whoops I've read it all in a day'.

It is such an intriguing storyline with two young girls being left at a railway station.  What made their mother leave them and why didn't she come back?  This is the story that journalist Vega wants to investigate despite being told to leave it alone by her boss.  Vega can't leave it alone though and she won't stop digging until she finds out the truth.

This is such an addictive book with twists and turns that shocked, surprised and delighted me.  I couldn't turn the pages fast enough and I would recommend setting aside a couple of hours when you pick up this book as you won't be able to put it down.

Unputdownable and completely engrossing, The Nowhere Girls is an unmissable book that kept me riveted from start to finish.  An easy five stars and a very highly recommended read.

What did I think?

Booked for Summer is Kathryn Freeman's latest romcom and it is filled with romance and books.  A book with books in it is always going to pique my interest and I enjoyed my virtual trip to Nantucket Island.

I loved the main characters of Jade and Liam, although not at first I have to say.  Jade's enthusiasm for running the bookshop is infectious so it's no wonder that she quickly makes friends as soon as she sets foot in Nantucket.  After a misunderstanding at the ferry crossing, Jade meets Liam and their attraction to each other is plain to see.  Of course, they both have their own hangups and neither of them are looking for anything long term...

The wonderfully drawn colourful characters pull this story along perfectly as well as the plot to close the bookshop.  What???  Close the bookshop?  I thought Kathryn Freeman wrote romcoms not horror stories!  I just loved how the whole community came together to fight for a common cause, which also happened to be them all ganging up on Liam as he owns the resort.  I really felt for him as there's a good reason why he wants make his resort the most exclusive on the island but he is a little blinkered because of it.

Flirty, charming and fun, Booked for Summer is an entertaining and enjoyable book that transports the reader across the Atlantic to the picturesque island of Nantucket.  It's a fabulous summer read.

What did I think?

That chilling strapline really made me sit up and take notice of Michael Cordy's new thriller, Manhattan Down, and it delivered chills and thrills on every page.  It's an incredibly original and highly imaginative thriller that takes the reader to the real, and scarily empty, streets of Manhattan in a breathtaking race against time.

When Manhattan falls asleep on 10th September, only a handful of people are left walking the streets: a group of eco-terrorists, a wounded detective and a single mother.  Nick Lockwood has sworn to protect and serve so he only has one thing on his mind: save the city.  Samantha Rossi is like a lion with its cub as she trawls the streets of Manhattan to find her daughter.  It's only a matter of time before the pair cross paths with both each other and the people responsible for bringing Manhattan to its knees.

I have got goosebumps just thinking about the book and my thoughts have been well and truly provoked.  It's like a cross between Die Hard and 24 and it would be an absolute travesty if this amazing book is not picked up for the big screen.  There are so many interesting subjects running alongside the razor-sharp plot to provoke debate, which makes this book a great choice for book groups.

Chilling, gripping, blisteringly fast-paced and scarily realistic, Manhattan Down is a breathtaking cli-fi thriller that had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.  I couldn't put it down and would highly recommend this completely unmissable and unforgettable book.  An easy five stars!

What did I think?

As soon as I saw that While We're Young was inspired by Ferris Bueller's Day Off I just had to read it and I was not disappointed; it was everything I expected it to be and more.  It may be a YA book but adults will love it too.

Anyone who has seen the film will notice some similar scenes and the scattering of references that pay homage to the John Hughes classic.  I absolutely loved these little nods to one of my favourite films but there is so much more to this wonderful book.

The characters are so well developed they almost pop out from the page and they all have their own little hangups and characteristics that really endeared them to me.  Grace is the main character but I also loved her brother James and her two best friends Isa and Everett who haven't been speaking to each other since they dated and broke up.  Grace sees an opportunity to bring her little friendship group back together again but it will involve them all bunking off school.

Incredibly entertaining, sweet and heartwarming, While We're Young is so much fun to read and it left me with a great big smile on my face.  I definitely plan to read it again to relive the fun, high jinks and emotion that delighted me from start to finish.

In a sequel to Presumed Innocent, the book that redefined the legal thriller, judge and lawyer Rusty Sabich returns to the courtroom to defend his step-son against a racially-charged murder indictment as the boy’s life – and perhaps Rusty’s last chance at happiness – hang in the balance.

Rusty is a retired judge attempting a third act in life with a loving soon-to-be wife, Bea, with whom he shares both a restful home on an idyllic lake in the rural Midwest and a plaintive hope that this marriage will be his best, and his last. What did I think?

I read Presumed Innocent many years ago so I was very excited to read Scott Turow's sequel, Presumed Guilty and I was not disappointed.  It's a real page-turner that transports the reader to an American courtroom as the life of a young man is held in the balance.

Rusty Sabich is now in his seventies and living in Skageon County with his fiancée Bea and her son Aaron.  Aaron has been in trouble with the law before but he appeared to be doing well until he was accused of murdering his girlfriend Mae Potter.  The Potter family have influence in Skageon so Aaron is presumed guilty from the start.

Rusty was a prosecutor before he became a judge so the last thing he expected was for his fiancée to ask him to defend her son in court.  Defense is a whole different ball game and it's one that Rusty needs to learn how to play very quickly if he is to prove Aaron's innocence.

The book is set out in four parts which follows the course of the trial.  Part one, Gone, has quite a gentle pacing as it introduces the characters and sets the scene of the crime.  The pacing picks up massively once you get to court in parts two to four: Prosecution, The Defense and Judgement.  It is just like being in court as Scott Turow paints such a vivid picture with his wonderfully descriptive writing.  

The US justice system is complex but, as with any legal system, the defendent's guilt must be proven beyond reasonable doubt by the prosecution.  Rusty knows how the prosecution works so it was brilliant to see him pick holes in their case.  Rusty is as sharp as ever and he puts on a very entertaining show that kept me so riveted that I couldn't put the book down.

Gripping, suspenseful and incredibly clever, Presumed Guilty is an absolute masterpiece.  It's a page-turning legal thriller that gets a firm hold on you and refuses to let go.  This is a sequel that was well worth waiting for.  Bravo, Mr Turow!

Benidorm Cocktail Hour (The Benidorm Series Book 3) - Jo Lyons

What did I think?

I have absolutely loved all of the books in the Benidorm series but I think Benidrom Cocktail Hour has to be my favourite as it didn't just make me cry with laughter, I also cried happy tears.

I love Connie and The Dollz, as well as Ged and Liam, and their hilarious escapades, so I raced straight onto the virtual Las Vegas flight after finishing book 2, Bendorm again.  Connie was hoping for a romantic getaway with Matteo but her trip has snowballed into including Ged and Liam's pre-moon and a gig with The Dollz.  There's also an unwelcome face on the same flight...

Oh Connie, she does get herself into some scrapes but with friends like The Dollz there's always someone there who has her back.  The Dollz are proper Geordie lasses who drink until they throw up (or fall asleep) and then start again!  Las Vegas won't know what's hit them when these crazy ladies descend on the Strip.

Benidorm Cocktail Hour is one of the funniest yet heartwarming books I have ever read.  It really should have waterproof pages though; I almost spat my cuppa out laughing from the start and I struggled to hold in my happy tears towards the end - that's how much I love these characters!  Jo Lyons never fails to make me laugh and with lots of laughs and plenty of romance, Benidorm Cocktail Hour is the perfect romantic comedy.

BLOG TOUR: Deadbeat - Adam Hamdy

What did I think?

Now that's what I call a gritty thriller!  I've had Adam Hamdy on my radar for a while but this is the first book of his that I have read and it's absolutely brilliant.  

Peyton Collard admits he is a deadbeat after being convicted of drink driving and causing the death of a young woman.  I actually felt really sorry for him and the chain of events that led to that devastating moment in time that saw his life veering off course.  War has got a lot to answer for and I could totally understand why Peyton, a forces veteran, drank himself into oblivion.

I have never flipped so much in my opinion of a protagonist.  From feeling sorry for Peyton at the start to despising him for taking more lives, but even that's not black and white.  Peyton isn't killing for his own gain, it's so his daughter can have a better life.  Oh man!  Although I could never condone taking a life, I can understand why the temptation was irresistible.

The chapters are short and punchy and the prose is action-packed making the pacing blisteringly fast.  It's just crying out to be made into a movie and I would be very surprised if we don't see this one on our screens in the future.   

With a protagonist you both like and despise, Deadbeat is a dark and gritty thriller that had me on the edge of my seat until my virtual stand up to applaud the magnificent and completely unpredictable conclusion.  A very highly recommended and completely unmissable book.

What did I think?

You'll always find me at the front of the queue when a new Jack Jordan book is released and I had very high expectations when I picked up Redemption.  Not only was I not disappointed, Jack Jordan saw my expectations and raised them to a whole new level.  WOW!  

Jack Jordan isn't called the Master of the Moral Dilemma for no reason and whilst there is an absolute belter of a moral dilemma in Redemption, there's also a thought-provoking twist that reminds us that there are two sides to every story.  But which side will each reader be on?  Team Evelyn or Team Aaron?

No parent would ever want to be in Evelyn and Tobias Moore's position; their beautiful 9-year-old son Joshua went off to camp and never returned after being killed in a hit-and-run.  Justice was served and the man who killed Joshua went to prison...but only for eleven years.  I could totally understand Evelyn's fury - Joshua's life was cruelly stolen and eleven years of prison is simply not enough for his killer to pay.  As soon as the sentence was delivered, Evelyn decided to make Aaron Alexander pay the ultimate price: a life for a life.

I couldn't help but feel sympathy for the Moores; their marriage has been under a considerable strain since Joshua's death as Evelyn single-mindedly planned her revenge.  Tobias has his own plan though: he wants to stop Evelyn from becoming a murderer and if that means protecting Aaron, then that's what he'll do.

Now this is where the story takes an unexpected turn as I was fully prepared to hate Aaron but peeling back the layers of his story broke my heart.  One tragic event changed the course of his life - he didn't plan to kill Joshua unlike Evelyn plans to kill Aaron.  The character of Aaron is so beautifully portrayed and I found his story incredibly poignant and emotional.  I will never forget him and the lessons his story taught me.

There appears to be no limit to Jack Jordan's talent and imagination so prepare for a long night of reading when you pick up Redemption as you won't be able to put it down.  Set out in sections representing the stages of grief, Redemption is an absolute masterpiece.  Once again, Jack Jordan scoops all the stars for his unmissable new book.

Unmissable, unputdownable and unforgettable - do not miss Redemption: one of the most eagerly anticipated books of the year and one that will not disappoint.

BLOG TOUR: Disturbing the Bones - Andrew Davis and Jeff Biggers

What did I think?

I was drawn to Disturbing the Bones because I have a keen interest in archaeology so I loved the setting; it's not Cairo, Egypt but Cairo, Illinois.  Finding bones at such a site is to be expected, but these bones are not ancient...

I loved Molly and her passion for archaeology, along with her protectiveness about the site, even when it places herself and her team in danger.  Veteran Chicago detective has a vested interest in Molly's find as he thinks the bones are those of his mother.  While all this is going on, America has a new president and she has plans to amend the constitution to which lots of people are opposed.

The plot is more political than I expected but it adds some extra spice to a gripping thriller.  I was incensed when certain things happened at the dig and I couldn't read fast enough to see how it would all play out.  The pacing certainly ramps up in the final third of the book and I couldn't put it down.

Fast-paced and action-packed, Disturbing the Bones is an entertaining and thought-provoking thriller.  I wouldn't be surprised to see it on the big screen at some point, especially as Andrew Davis is a renowned film director.  I enjoyed the book and would definitely be interested in seeing it on the big screen.
