What did I think?

After the jaw-dropping cliffhanger in the last Detective Kate Young book (A Life for a Life) I couldn't wait to get my hands on A Truth for a Truth and it did not disappoint in the slightest.  In fact, Carol Wyer has wowed me again and I absolutely loved every second of this excellent book.

Although A Truth for a Truth could be read as a standalone, as there are some short recaps of the previous books, you can only really appreciate the magnificence of the series if you read the books in order.  I love the Detective Kate Young series and I'm already chomping at the bit for the next one as this book finishes on another jaw-dropping moment.

What a pickle Kate has got herself in after shooting her boss and what a moral dilemma - should she act like a criminal and hide the body or act like a DI and turn herself in?  Not knowing who she can trust on the force, makes the decision easier for her and when she's tasked with heading the investigation into Superintendent Dickson's disappearance she can cover her tracks even further.

The main character of Kate Young is so well developed that I feel as if I know her and I was totally rooting for her to literally get away with murder.  Throughout the series Kate has been on the verge of cracking up as she hears her dead husband Chris talking to her inside her head.  Her mental health gets even worse when Dickson's voice takes over from Chris and members of her team start to notice when the conversations start taking place out loud.

Tense, gripping and enthralling, A Truth for a Truth is outstanding from start to finish.  This series is getting better and better (and it was already brilliant to start with).  Very highly recommended.

What did I think?

I'm a huge fan of Carol Wyer's novels so I was very excited to read her new novel, Behind Closed Doors and I'm delighted to say that I was not disappointed.  

When Stacey's stepdaughter Lyra is kidnapped, Stacey is forced to revisit her own kidnapping 30 years earlier as the key to finding Lyra is buried deep in Stacey's past memories.  There's a real race against time feel that keeps the pages turning rapidly; if it's the same kidnapper, then we know they're serious as Stacey has the scars to prove it.

As Stacey tries to recover suppressed memories, it creates a dual timeline as the reader finds out what happened to Stacey in 1992 as well as experiencing Lyra's spookily similar kidnapping in 2022.  I was constantly wondering whether it was the same kidnapper or just someone who knew enough about Stacey's past to become a copycat.  You'll have to read it for yourself to find out which one it was!

Behind Closed Doors is gripping, intriguing and incredibly tense.   Once again, Carol Wyer had me on the edge of my seat as I raced through another one of her fantastic page-turners.  A recommended read.

What did I think?

Carol Wyer has gone and done it again!  Every time I think I've read the best book in the Detective Kate Young series, Carol Wyer goes and writes an even better one.  This already brilliant series is getting better and better and A Life for a Life is outstanding.  If you think the blurb sounds good, the prologue is something else - all I can say is "WOW!"

Whilst the story of police corruption and Detective Kate Young's personal story is a continuation of the series, there's enough backstory included in the book that you could definitely read this as a standalone.  The series is so good though that you really don't want to miss the prior two books (An Eye for an Eye and A Cut for a Cut).  

Kate and her very small team are on the hunt for a serial killer in Stoke-on-Trent and with nothing seeming to link the deaths, Kate fears that her unblemished record is about to be tarnished.  Kate's boss, Superintendent John Dickson, is doing everything he can to see her fail and finally get rid of the Kate-shaped thorn in his side.  I absolutely love to hate Dickson - he's like a supervillain with his many faces: upstanding police superintendent on one side and something much darker and devious on the other.

The whole book is brilliant from start to finish: it's sublimely plotted, flawlessly written and perfectly paced - I really can't recommend it highly enough.  I devoured every single page and the jaw-dropping ending left me hungry for more.  A well-deserved five stars.

What did I think?

I love everything that Carol Wyer writes and A Cut for a Cut, the second book in the DI Kate Young series, is no exception.  It's absolutely brilliant: fast-paced, gripping, tense and fraught with danger.  As it summarises the main plot points from book 1 (An Eye for an Eye), A Cut for a Cut can be read as a standalone, but it is so much richer and impressive when read in series order.  Whichever order you read the books in, the Detective Kate Young series is a must-read for crime fiction fans.

Kate Young and her team are on the hunt for a serial rapist but Kate has one eye off the ball as she strives to bring her husband's killer to justice.  With corruption in the force, Kate's every move is watched and reported back to dodgy Superintendent John Dickson.  As Dickson works feverishly to cover his tracks, Kate is slowly gathering evidence against him but time is running out unless Kate delivers on the rapist case.

Ooh this series is SO good and Carol Wyer's plotting in A Cut for a Cut is dazzling.  I was on the edge of my seat and feeling suspicious of pretty much everyone throughout this fantastic novel.  With so much going on, it really kept me on my toes and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.  As much as I wanted to find out who the rapist was, I was equally intrigued by Dickson's cover up as this is the thread that binds the series together.

Simply brilliant!  A Cut for a Cut is outstanding from start to finish.  It's a stunning addition to a marvellous series and I can't wait to see what's next in store for Kate.  Very highly recommended.

What did I think?

Wow, what a novel.  This is an amazing start to a new detective series and I, for one, am completely hooked.  With an ending that both satisfied me and left me hungry for more, I've already done my research and spotted that the next book in the series is due out in June 2021 (yippee!).

Detective Kate Young is a very interesting character; she's in a kind of intermediate state between fragility and resilience after being brought back from her leave, with some of her team questioning whether she's ready to return.  The case is personal to her superior so he wants the best to investigate it but by disregarding Kate's wellbeing you do wonder whether he has an ulterior motive.

Whilst investigating a potential serial killer, Kate is haunted by flashbacks of a former crime scene and you can really feel her struggling to keep her grip on reality.  The flashbacks themselves are horrifying and made my pulse race as Kate replays the scene over and over, getting a little further each time to really build up tension. Being put in charge of such a high profile case, I often felt that Kate was torn between her heart wanting to numb the pain and her head wanting the return of the astute detective she is known to be.

This isn't just another police procedural though, it also delves into forensics and their role in crime solving.  I loved this aspect of the story and felt it added another dimension to the plot, making it feel like I was reading true crime.  Clearly, it's not just Kate who needed to keep her grip on reality!

I don't think any review I write will do this book justice.  It's simply brilliant and I loved every minute of it.   I was enjoying it so much I even forgot to try to work out who the killer was - now if that's not the sign of a good book, I don't know what is!  Impossible to put down and gripping from start to finish, An Eye for an Eye is an exceptional crime thriller from a hugely talented and very prolific writer; it's not only very highly recommended it's an absolute must read.
