Benidorm Cocktail Hour (The Benidorm Series Book 3) - Jo Lyons

Benidorm Cocktail Hour is the third book in The Benidorm Series. Follow Connie and The Dollz as they ‘do’ Las Vegas.

Connie attempts to juggle her romantic break with an over-the-top stag do, an increasingly heavy workload, and a case of unrequited love. With Ged and Liam turning into major bridezillas, Connie struggles to keep up with their incessant demands for forced enjoyment and their obsessive hunt for A-List celebrities. When The Dollz ramp up their reckless behaviour, Connie finds herself on the receiving end of some disgruntled local mobsters and an accidental wedding that should never have taken place.

Amid the chaos, will her and Matteo’s love ever find a way? Only one thing is for sure - what happens in Vegas, MUST stay in Vegas…

What did I think?

I have absolutely loved all of the books in the Benidorm series but I think Benidrom Cocktail Hour has to be my favourite as it didn't just make me cry with laughter, I also cried happy tears.

I love Connie and The Dollz, as well as Ged and Liam, and their hilarious escapades, so I raced straight onto the virtual Las Vegas flight after finishing book 2, Bendorm again.  Connie was hoping for a romantic getaway with Matteo but her trip has snowballed into including Ged and Liam's pre-moon and a gig with The Dollz.  There's also an unwelcome face on the same flight...

Oh Connie, she does get herself into some scrapes but with friends like The Dollz there's always someone there who has her back.  The Dollz are proper Geordie lasses who drink until they throw up (or fall asleep) and then start again!  Las Vegas won't know what's hit them when these crazy ladies descend on the Strip.

Benidorm Cocktail Hour is one of the funniest yet heartwarming books I have ever read.  It really should have waterproof pages though; I almost spat my cuppa out laughing from the start and I struggled to hold in my happy tears towards the end - that's how much I love these characters!  Jo Lyons never fails to make me laugh and with lots of laughs and plenty of romance, Benidorm Cocktail Hour is the perfect romantic comedy.

Many thanks to the author for a gifted copy to read and review; this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Atone (A Taryn Winter Crime Thriller Book 2) - Karen Crawford

Retired Detective Taryn Winter returns to consult for Las Vegas Metro Detective Daniel Brady and FBI Special Agent Jenae Shannon. They are tracking an elusive opponent who has been watching them and learning their secrets - their vulnerabilities.

After a near miss the first time, the three are determined to put an end to the killing spree, embarking upon an investigation that will take them to remote places in Nevada and Arizona.

The killer is leaving a trail, hoping to lure them into a trap. But there are unexpected twists, sparking an evolution that could lead to more violence and unpredictable behavior.

An obsession with Taryn Winter will bring the killer back to Las Vegas and force a second confrontation. Will their own vulnerabilities be used against them?

Will the Vegas trio be prepared for a new game with a ruthless killer?

What did I think?

I was totally blown away by Underbelly, the first book in the Taryn Winter series, which ends on a bit of a cliffhanger so I was chomping at the bit to read Atone.  As it's very much a continuation of the story, you do need to read Underbelly first in order to get the most out of Atone.  Also if you read them out of order, you'll find out who the killer is in Underbelly so I would definitely advise starting at the beginning of this outstanding series.

Picking up where Underbelly left off, we follow the killer out of Las Vegas and the focus is on them for the first half of the book.  Although I love reading about the working relationship between Taryn and Daniel, I really enjoyed seeing inside the mind of a murderer so I wasn't too disappointed at the shift in focus.  I usually don't have any empathy with the baddie but Karen Crawford really turns her character inside out and I found it made the killer more human than monster as they wrestle with their emotions and we learn about their past.

I can't really say anything about the superb plot as it could give too much away and spoil the story, especially if you haven't read Underbelly yet.  With plenty of shocks and surprises in store, Atone is as fast-paced, gritty and outstanding as Underbelly but the pair of them together are out of this world AMAZING.  If you'll forgive me for keep mentioning Underbelly, but the pair of them go together like two halves of the same whole and I really can't recommend them highly enough.

Atone is an outstanding, and very well named, conclusion to the story that started in Underbelly; Underbelly left me completely speechless but Karen Crawford has really hit one out of the park with Atone.  The writing is vivid and dramatic and I was so invested in the story that I had more than my fair share of gasp out loud moments.  The character development is excellent and as Karen Crawford gives us a glimpse inside their minds, I felt like I knew them personally.  I am most definitely a huge fan of the Taryn Winter Crime Thriller series and I can't wait to see what her next case might be.

i chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Underbelly (A Taryn Winter Crime Thriller Book 1) - Karen Crawford

A popular Las Vegas hotel and casino is undergoing a billion-dollar renovation, and a killer is operating in the construction zone. The Square is open for guests, but they are unaware that a predator is lurking below the facade of luxury. One woman’s death will draw attention to the murders and spark an investigation.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department retired detective Taryn Winter, her former partner, Daniel Brady and FBI Special Agent Jenae Shannon are on the trail, risking everything to bring a killer to justice. But their opponent has become obsessed with one of them and is on the hunt. Will they find the killer first or be the next victims?

What did I think?

This book does exactly what it says on the cover as Karen Crawford transports the reader to the dark and seedy underbelly of Las Vegas.  Although I've seen it on TV, I've never been to Las Vegas but, through Karen Crawford's descriptive and immersive prose, I actually felt like I was seeing the twinkly lights of the strip and hearing the jangle of coins in the slots whilst reading Underbelly.

Karen Crawford has created a flawed yet empathetic character in the protagonist of Taryn Winter.  Taryn is a very intriguing woman; she has retired from the police force but still works as a consultant so it's almost like she hasn't left at all.  I love the relationship she has with her ex-partner, Daniel and how she really cares about the community, especially the ladies of the night.  I could go on more about the amazing character of Taryn, and I have so many questions regarding her past, so I hope this series continues for a long time to come in order to answer them.

Where there is prey, there are predators and that is so very true in Las Vegas.  Gamblers, drunks and prostitutes are there for the taking and a killer is using a luxury hotel as their personal kill room.  It should be an easy collar for the Las Vegas MPD with so many CCTV cameras around but this killer seems to be invisible.  The hunt for the killer reaches fever pitch after a wealthy patron's wife becomes one of the victims.  The increased media interest puts the police under more pressure to catch the killer and increased pressure leads to a higher risk of mistakes being made.  This is one very confident and arrogant murderer who always seems to be just out of reach of the long arm of the law.

The feel of the book reminds me of Michael Connelly's Bosch, both in the complexity of the main character and the outstanding quality of writing.  What Bosch does for Los Angeles, Winter does for Las Vegas and I can't wait to continue her story in Atone.  Karen Crawford is a breath of fresh air in the over-saturated crime genre.  I'm a huge fan of crime fiction but I'm finding it a little predictable these days; this fast-paced, gritty and outstanding debut kept me guessing from beginning to beyond the end.  Underbelly is simply extraordinary and I can't rate it highly enough; 5 stars just doesn't do it justice!  A very highly recommended read.

I chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Author Interview: Q&A with Jon Rance - author of Dan and Nat Got Married

I recently had the pleasure of reading and reviewing Jon Rance's new novel, Dan and Nat Got Married.  If you didn't catch my review, you can read it here.  If you haven't picked up a Jon Rance book yet, you are missing out on an amazing experience.  Dan and Nat Got Married has the perfect mix of humour and real life drama; I can't believe this is my first Jon Rance novel, but it certainly won't be my last.  Jon has very kindly offered to answer some questions for my blog, so without further ado...

So that readers understand the reason for some of my questions, can you tell us a little bit about your new book, Dan and Nat Got Married?

Hello and thanks so much for having me on your blog today! Dan And Nat Got Married is a romantic comedy that asks the question - can marriage between two relative strangers work?

It’s the story of two people, Dan Fox, 34, and Nat Howard, 32, who wake up after a very messy drunken night in Las Vegas married. Dan was jilted at the altar two years before and Nat is living back at home with her parents after her perfect boyfriend dumped her and she had to move out of his bespoke flat in Putney. Both of them have a lot of emotional baggage, but decide that giving their marriage a shot might be the cure for their broken hearts.

We follow Dan and Nat as they attempt to be married without really knowing anything about each other. And when Nat’s ex-boyfriend Charlie comes back into her life, she must decide between following her heart with Dan or reliving the past with Charlie. Set in London, Dan And Nat Got Married, is a funny and full of heart modern romantic comedy about marriage, relationships, and giving love a second chance.

It’s my attempt at writing the perfect British romantic comedy.

Dan feels like he is living The Hangover film in your book. What was the inspiration for Dan and Nat Got Married?

The inspiration came about because I was trying to find a unique way my two characters could meet. I got married to my wife in Las Vegas - I must add that my marriage was planned and we definitely knew each other - but I thought it would be a good starting point for a romantic comedy. Next I had to figure out what would make two people, who barely know each other, give their marriage a go. The answer quickly became obvious - because they’re both looking for love and have been hurt so badly that they’re willing to stake everything on this because they already did it the “proper” way and it didn’t work out. I was also inspired in part by my own story of meeting my wife. We met travelling in Sydney and fell in love and decided to get married within months of meeting each other. It made me realise that there are no right or wrong ways to meet and fall in love.

What's the most embarrassing thing you've ever done when drunk (or even sober)?

Oh God where do I start! I have many drunken stories that are very embarrassing, but I think I’ll go back to sixth form college for my most embarrassing sober story. There was a girl - isn’t there always - who I really liked. She was gorgeous, probably about a million miles out of my league. I didn’t really know her because she was in a different class. I was obsessed by her, but completely out of my depth. Luckily - or unluckily, I’ll let you be the judge - a good friend convinced me that I should ask her out. It couldn’t be worse than loving her from afar, surely? And maybe - he convinced me again - she might say yes. He was obviously far more confident about this than me. So one day I walked up to her in the middle of class and asked her out. I was red, sweaty, and could barely speak a word of English, but I somehow managed to squeeze the words out. Horribly, painfully, and very embarrassingly, but I did it. She very kindly said she’d let me know. She didn’t.

You can never have too many rom-coms, in my opinion, so if Dan and Nat Got Married was made into a film, who would you cast in the starring roles?

Totally agree, I love a good rom com and for my dream cast I’m going to go British! For the roles of Dan and Nat, I would go with Domhnall Gleeson, as he was superb in the Richard Curtis film, ‘About Time’. For Nat I would go with Carey Mulligan because I think she’s such a brilliant actor. My two other favourite characters in the book are Dan and Nat’s best friends, Adam and Ellie - who rather steal the limelight in most of the book. For Adam, I would have to go with James Corden. He’s such a funny man and a very underrated actor. For Ellie, I would go for the comedian, Aisling Bea, who has that perfect mixture of beauty and humour. I think this would make an amazing romantic comedy film by the way! If only we could get Richard Curtis interested!

If you were going on holiday and could only take 3 books, which books would you take?

Blimey! That’s a hard one. Definitely ‘One Day’ by David Nicholls because it’s one of my favourite books ever. Nick Hornby’s, ‘High Fidelity’, because it was the book that inspired me to be a writer and lastly, the complete ‘Adrian Mole Diaries’ because they’re just the funniest books ever!

When you aren't writing, what do you enjoy doing?

Putting aside things like reading and watching TV because they’re all related to my work in some way, my biggest love is travelling. I met my wife travelling in Australia and now we have two kids we still love to travel as much as we can. We went to Mexico this year and it was incredible!

What are your writing routines?

I’m not sure I have many routines other than lots of tea! I always go over the work from the previous day before I start writing and I always try and finish a first draft as quickly as I can. I believe first drafts are all about getting the words on the page and that’s it. I generally try and write from about 8am until about 12pm. I find any more than four or five hours a day and the quality drops. I spend a lot of the time between thinking and making notes. I make a lot of notes - thank goodness for the notes app on my phone!

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you started writing?

I was born in Southampton and went to university in London to study English Literature. After university and a few years getting “life experience” I went travelling, which is where I met my American wife. I now live in California and have two kids. I’ve always been a writer. When I was younger it was cartoons and short stories, but I always knew I wanted to write. I wrote two unpublished novels before my third novel, ‘This Thirtysomething Life’, got me a two book publishing deal with Hodder and Stoughton.

Dan and Nat Got Married is your fifth romantic comedy novel. What inspired you to write in the romantic comedy genre?

I think as writers we tend to write what we read and what we love. I love comedy and I love romance so it just seemed natural to me to write that. I’d also be horrible at writing crime thrillers or science fiction!

Can you give us a sneaky hint of what you are working on next?

It’s in the very early stages of development at the moment and I probably won’t start actually writing it until after, Dan And Nat Got Married, is published. I can’t say anything about the title or story yet, but I will say that it’s going to be the biggest book I’ve tried to write. So far all of my books have been comedies, but for my next I want to write something bigger with more scope. It’s still in the same genre, but it’s going to have a lot more drama and definitely more room for emotional development. Sorry, that’s all I can say at the moment. Thanks so much for having me. It’s been a pleasure.

Thanks so much for answering my questions, Jon!  I think you have written the perfect British comedy and Richard Curtis should definitely snap this one up!

The British romantic comedy you need to read this year.

From the bestselling author of This Thirtysomething Life, Happy Endings and Sunday Dinners, comes a brilliantly funny romantic comedy, perfect for fans of Love Actually, Notting Hill and Bridget Jones.

Marriage can be difficult. Especially when you've only just met. Meet Dan Fox, 34, an online marketing manager from Clapham, who was jilted at the altar two years ago by the love of his life and hasn’t dated since.

Nat Howard, 32, is living back at home with her parents in Dorking after her perfect boyfriend dumped her and she had to move out of his bespoke flat in Putney.

On separate Stag and Hen weekends in Las Vegas, Dan and Nat wake up married. Both too drunk to remember what happened, they return to England and try to get on with their lives. But there was something about Nat that makes the usually cautious Dan think they should give their marriage a go. Nat’s still in love with her Ex, but maybe Dan can help mend her broken heart.

Can marriage between two relative strangers really work? And when Nat's ex-boyfriend - the gorgeous Charlie - comes back into her life, she must decide - something old or something new?

Set in London, Dan And Nat Got Married, is a funny and full of heart modern romantic comedy about marriage, relationships, and giving love a second chance.

What did I think?

There's something so very special about Dan and Nat Got Married; it has all of the perfect ingredients to make a laugh out loud, pull at your heartstrings, not too mushy kind of love story.  I loved it from the very first chapter and I had so many laugh out loud moments that I had several visits from my old evil friend, the hiccups.

I wasn't really sure what to expect when I started this as it is the first book I have read by Jon Rance, but I quickly settled into the book as if I was meeting up with an old friend.  The writing style is so humorous, yet so true to life that you can imagine this happening in real life.  It seems so far fetched for strangers to end up married after meeting on drunken trips to Vegas but I bet it has happened on many occasions.  Once they get over the initial shock and horror, it becomes apparent that perhaps Dan and Nat were meant to meet, fall in love and get married after all - they just missed out the falling in love bit and went straight on to marriage!

I loved seeing the relationship between Dan and Nat grow, with the encouragement of their friends who were witnesses at the wedding in Vegas.  Friends who might have also taken the plunge had they stayed in Vegas a bit longer.  There seemed to be a laugh in every chapter but with every up there is always a down; enter the exes to trample over the young shoots of feelings that Dan and Nat were cultivating.  I was mentally shouting 'noooooo Nat' when her ex, Charlie, came back on the scene.

Chapters alternated between Dan and Nat and although it is a tried and tested method, in this instance I think it was brilliantly done. Jon Rance has written from both the male and female perspectives and captured both of their individual characters perfectly.  It has left me eager to read Jon Rance's back catalogue and I actually wonder how I have not read any of his books before.

Dan and Nat Got Married gets a definite 5 out of 5 from me - I'd give it more if I could.  Put your exercise DVDs away and read Dan and Nat Got Married instead - it'll give you a better tummy muscle workout with all the belly laughs you are sure to have.

Many thanks to Jon Rance for putting a smile on my face by sending me this e-book in exchange for an honest review.  Look out for my interview with Jon Rance later in the week.
